The bell rings.
The children scatter
With their paper hats
And bread crumb boogers.
Today they made butter
For real. They were pilgrims
For make-believe.
Now they are excited for the holiday
Of Thanksgiving.
They will fight with football
For attention from their fathers.
They will eat tamales and torticas.
Perhaps a bit of turkey.
What is a sweet potato? They ask
And laugh when I try to say
“Gracias.”
