You know, this has been a stressful past two weeks or so. But all of a sudden, everything is working out so wonderfully well. And wow, how much more I appreciate things like my email not flashing, my files not being deleted, my printer working, wearing jeans and running shoes to class (instead of teacher clothes) and stuff like that. And I was so busy. And you know when things started to calm down? When I SERIOUSLY for real this time...made time for God. It's true what they say...there's no excuse for pushing him to the side, and so often I do because I'm bogged down with other things or I spread out my hour alone with God into fifteen minute sessions (which aren't necessarily a bad thing, but there's definitely a lot of benefits to a continuous hour). It's when we make time for God that everything really works out...Okay, so maybe not everything works out perfectly and we still have to deal with a lot of crap, but at least we can be more optimistic and see the good in the bad and all that.

Bible study was wonderful lastnight. I'd like to thank my group for the great discussion :) I love you all so much.

I'd like to share some verses that have encouraged me today. I hope that they will be an encouragement to you as well.

"A fool finds no pleasure in understanding but delights in airing his own opinions." -Proverbs 18:2

"He who answers before listening--that is his folly and his shame." -Proverbs 18:13

-This made me think about how often I don't listen to people and instead, while they are talking, I think about what I'm going to say next and fight to get the next word. If I could just listen and understand people as they talk, instead of focusing on my own opinions, maybe I'd grow a lot more in wisdom, understanding, and love. Maybe I'd be a better friend...but most of all, maybe God would love seeing that change. You know, God just waits...He wants to show off what He can do in your life, so don't be afraid to pray for blessings, and wisdom, and love...

Also, Proverbs 31 really hit me today. It's one of those things I always liked a whole lot, but wow, it really hit me today. Check it out, yo! It's way awesome.

My room is a disaster! I could barely find my keyboard. I totally walked into and sat down in the wrong class today. But it's okay cuz this other girl did the same thing. Hahahaha! I also said that the 4th and 24th were 10 days apart...but I caught myself and then said, no, 14...no! I mean, 20! Grrr. It's one of those "I'm lost and stupid" days. And my education professor (Bobbi!) says something like "This speaker was so amazing...he really makes you feel special for what you are doing (teaching)." And I, without realizing it, make this "pshhhh" sound and roll my eyes and she looks down at me and says, "Oh, don't give me that "psshh!" So, I try to recover by saying, "Yeah, I need a motivational speaker to make me feel special and appreciated in teaching." Heck, I'm not even really a teacher yet and I already feel like this country hates me. But goodness, I can't even count by tens or get my classrooms right and I'm nearly halfway through my junior year of college. Brains are funny, aren't they? I love it. I entertain myself. If it weren't for my silly brain, I'd be a very bored girl.

Survey:

Name: Amanda Louise Harrington
Birthday: November 4, 1981
On a scale of 1-10, how excited are you about this weekend? 15!
Why? BECAUSE two of my very bestest friends in the world AND definitely the BEST guys in the world (I'm NOT kidding, either, they are THE BEST! Anne, hunny, you are so blessed! I hope you're coming too!) are coming to visit ME! Me, little Amanda! Why? Because they love me, that's why! Why do they love me? I have no idea!!! But they're awesome! Movie and Game night is Friday, Choir Concert Saturday...yippee yahoo! It's gonna be fab! Boffo!

Joyous day!
Okay, I have a funny story for you!

My computer has three viruses. Nothing seems to work quite right, but I can get papers done if I type REALLY fast and save it every two minutes. This, as you can imagine, is an interesting thing to watch.

I downloaded a new virus scan. It found the viruses that Norton did not, thank goodness. But once it found them and I tried to clean them, it didn't work. When I tried to delete them, it said they do not exist.

My printer works sometimes. For no reason at all it sometimes decides to not work.

My email blinks all the time. I can't delete anything from my mailbox. I used to think this was my computer's fault, but then I realized that MINE is the only one that does it, no matter who's computer I am on! Weird!

And my campus snail mail is being opened by some anonymous person...

Does anyone have any logical explanations? Is there a conspiracy?

In other news, let me check...yeah, God is still awesome and yes, I'm still doing juuuust WONDERFUL! It's a great day to be alive, as they may say down there in Tennessee. The weekend was a good one and Total Praise rocked the house. Hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah!

Prayer requests: the people that were in the accident...the soccer team, the driver of the car, and of course, their family
the effort of promoting overseas student teaching...which is going well, I shall add
Heather's pastor, who has cancer
MuskieFest Fundraisers and organizing things (like workshops!)
our Bible Study tomorrow night...that the Holy Spirit would be jumpin' jumpin...
our Movie and Game Night Friday, that we have a lot of visitors and a lot of fun!
Generation Celebration on Friday
Car27 on Saturday (a Christian band) is playing here, pray for lots of guests
My grandma
Summer trips...

Grace and peace yo!

I have been housesitting for the past two weeks. I saw this as an excellent opportunity for alone time--more time with God, my thoughts, and reflection. I have always been the kind of person that needed time alone. After a few months in a house of 6 girls, lots of friends, lots of work, and so on...it's easy to become overwhelmed. I thought it would be great to spend a long time out to collect myself. I saw it as an answer to prayer. Now, don't get me wrong! I LOVE all my friends and the best thing in the world is spending time with them. They make me laugh ever so much. But you know, college life can be overwhelming, especially when you're the kind of person that needs that alone time once in awhile. So although I saw it as an answer to prayer, I now understand that God's real intention what to give me a lesson.

For the past year and almost-half, I haven't fully appreciated my Lighthouse girls. I haven't fully appreciated our late night talks. I haven't fully appreciated being interrupted while writing a report to comfort someone, talk to someone, look at (or taste) something someone created, wrote, or found. I haven't fully appreciated hearing people in the bathroom at 6 am on the day I can sleep in. I haven't fully appreciated hearing someone come up the stairs at 2am. I haven't fully appreciated hearing Brad yell and scream across the hall on Chrystal's guitar, or watching someone clean out a dirty, smelly fish bowl... I haven't fully appreciated sighing at the sight of lastnight's dishes, blankets, pillows, trash, empty cans, etc., strewn all over the house. I haven't fully appreciated the ringing of our doorbell several times in a row because an obnoxious friend wants to make their presence known :) I haven't fully appreciated someone reminding me it's dinner time, someone asking if I feel all right, someone telling me my shirt's inside out or backwards... I haven't fully appreciated Lindsay tripping on the floor, the bathroom being occupied for 3 hours straight... I haven't fully appreciated seeing Veronica's strength day in and day out, her tired eyes, her hugs, her smell, her smile, and her tears...and Finny :). I haven't fully appreciated seeing Lindsay's smiles, her frustrations, her ups and downs of everyday life and her outbursts of silliness. I haven't fully appreciated Kari's curlers, her laugh, her goodmornings and her goodnights, her hugs, her questions, her stories... I haven't fully appreciated Chrystal's soft voice, her back rubs, her hugs, her busy-ness... I haven't fully appreciated Kendra...Kendra's long talks, the way she can help me through any problem, the way she can listen and talk for hours and hours and hours, pushing anything and everything to the side because I know--I know we are more important to her than any paper, grade, or test that exists.

I just want you all to know that I'm sorry for not fully appreciating you. There are many things this world has to offer, but this world doesn't have anything that compares to you.

I love you!

"You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You, whose thoughts are fixed on You!" -Isaiah 26:3
"...but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother." -Proverbs 18:24
"Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails." Proverbs 19:21
"As iron sharpens iron, so ne man sharpens another." -Proverbs 27:17

Susan is here!!!!!!! Yay for us! She's going to write you a note!

Hi. :)

lol...she's being shy.

The best thing about this year is my gurlz! I love you all! Lighthouse girls...dude, I've missed you this past week--since I've been "caught up" you know... We just spent a few hours reading, listening to music, and playing piano (Susan did that part). It was fun and ever so relaxing. Good stuff. Except that I was reading a terrifying story! Ahhh! Nightmares tonight, you betcha!

Lesson for the day:

Being in denial, although it may not be the best thing for one's health, is a whole lot easier than facing one's own thoughts, feelings, and fate.

For one thing, our thoughts can be crazy (especially mine), our feelings can't be trusted, and fate...well, who knows what that is? God's plan is good and all, and I trust it, but mixed with thoughts and feelings, it's really difficult to go through days like these where they all seem to conflict. Or maybe they don't conflict...God is not a god of disorder, remember (that's a verse somewhere). Therefore, I've brought this on myself. I do blame myself way too much. There has to be someone to blame, though, right? Well, I should stop with blaming. Give it all to God, that's what I would say. Should I deny my thoughts? My feelings? I don't know. This happens to me every semester. It's always something.

Tip of the day: Skip the next entry and read the one after that. They say the same thing, but the second one is easier to read. Don't ask me why it printed it twice.

Computers are meant to make life easier and more efficient. Just remember that. I'm trying to be thankful. I'm trying to be thankful. I'm trying to be thankful. Do you KNOW what it takes to be a teacher??? Let me count the ways! 1. Money...yes, you're own extra money. We've already been told that when you get you're first teaching job, you need to get out a loan of at least 2,000 dollars--to decorate and furnish your room, buy anything else you may need--including supplies, clothes, etc. 2. More Money: to pay for your 5-10 years of college (no one really makes it in four...and then you have all the "extras" --you've gotta get your Master's, which is an extra year, then you have conferences, in-services, and tons and tons of things to go to so they can show you more and more and more stuff throughout your career). 3. Time: sorry, this isn't a 9 to 5. Nope, it's not a 7 to 3:30 job either. You have lesson plans to make (which take forever), a 7 hour day to plan (making sure you fill all the trillions of state requirements), 5 days of the week. You have papers to grade, people to meet with (including angry parents, uncooperative co-workers, principals, superintendants, Board of Education, community members, psychotic parents, overprotective parents, student teachers, etc. etc.) 4. Intelligence: So maybe high school teachers have one or two subjects to teach, 2 or 3 lessons a day (that repeat each other). Yes, that's difficult. I feel for you. But early childhood? You have math, spelling, reading, writing, science, social studies, grammar, motor skills (large and fine), developmental skills, social skills, health, etc. etc.). These must be in lessons that move, move, move--fast fast fast! There should be something new and exciting to do every 6-10 minutes. 5. Talent: um, need I explain this? 6. Energy: I'm considering buying stock in Proctor and Gamble...I'll be keeping them in business most of my life from all the caffeine pills I'm going to have to take. 7. Enthusiasm: Yes, Prozac too, please. 8. Small appetite: Your lunch break will be spent with your head on your desk, praying. Or crying. Or grading papers. Or making sure everything is prepared for the next lesson. Or arguing with a child, parent, coworker...whatever. You get the idea. 9. Patience: haaaaaaaaahahaaahahahaaaahaaaa If you wanna be a teacher, you need to be made of 80% patience. At least. 10. The "glare:" You all know the "look" those really good teachers seem to have that says "Sit down and shutup or I will take you down..." without having to say anything at all. 11. Eyes in the back of your head, on the other side of the room, and well, pretty much everywhere. 12. At least 3 bodies to help you. Multiply, if possible. Clones are good. 12. No life. Teaching is your life. 13. Summers off. Yippee! I'll be spending mine at the psychiatrist! And perhaps catching up on my own children...("Oh my honey! You've grown 6 inches since I saw you last!) 14. Oh yeah, there's more. But guess what? I'm busy :) I LOVE kids! I LOVE teaching. But if I ever hear anyone say teachers are paid too much...that teachers shouldn't have aides, tutors, etc...I will personally strangle you. Thank you.

Wow! This morning seems at least a month ago! My feet hurt so much...I don't know how teachers do it Monday through Friday. I've decided to marry a doctor. That way, he can prescribe me something, like Prozac or Ritalin to keep me on my toes all day. Shwew...I don't know about this teacher stuff. I wonder if there's a first grade teacher opening for just Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Hmm probably not. I'm pretty sure my first grade teacher was on speed. How the heck was she so happy all the time?

So you'd think I'd be the nice teacher everyone likes, right? Ha! I'm not. Okay, so some kids like me...but I've been screamed at, cussed at, and well, a four year girl glared at me for about an hour straight. Some kids have nothing but hatred for me. I thought I'd be the kind that wanted to be every kid's best friend. No...I don't really care if I'm everyone's favorite or not. It's pretty impossible to do anyway.

Yeah, so I'm going to go take a nap now, at 7:00 in the evening. :) I am pretty whooped.

Catch ya on the flip side

Amanda <3

Prayer Requests--
The shooter in Maryland and families of the victims
Girls at work that have been sick almost constantly
Amanda Gleason, who hurt herself pretty bad in the Homecoming parade
The Muskies basketball team
the rest of this week...goodness, Tuesday is already over! Weekend here we come!!!!!

Monday, October 21, 2002

Hmm...I thought for sure I'd updated this thing but um, I guess not... I'm confused. Well anyway, I'm back at school now. It's a great place to be! Kari, Lindsay, and I went to WalMart lastnight and made a stop at Burger King for some snacks. It was so yummy. I had a Hershey pie. Mmmmh good! Since then, I've just been studying and all that good stuff. Hopefully I'll be spending some good time with God today. :-)

I've decided to just admit it that guys are really, really, really strange! I don't understand them at all. And I know what Sarah always tells me, that we are the same and it's only the evil things of this world that make us different...well I must be evil. Or maybe it's just all the guys I know. Oh well, I might just stick to being evil if that'll keep them away from me! Cause everytime one comes around, it's just nothin but trouble.

Okay, well I'll see ya'll later. It's a beautiful day so get out there and enjoy it and may the grace and peace of Christ be with you :) Speaking of which, I have a great verse! Let me go get my Bible...

Okay! I got it! Shwew.

"You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You, whose thoughts are fixed on You!" _Isaiah 26:3

Hi! Yep, still at home. I visited my Grandma and Aunt Mary today with my dad. That was way stellar and my grandma told me about how her and my Grandpa met. Very interesting I love my Grandma a whole lot. She and I are alike in so many ways.

I also got my hair cut, ate Chinese food, and read the rest of Tom Sawyer. I slept in till 11:00, too! It was great. I've been eating A LOT, which is strange because everytime I eat at school I get sick, ARA or not. So it must be a psychological thing. What do you think, Kendra?

My dad has taken in this stray cat. He's about the most crazy animal loving guy I've ever seen (and no, not in THAT way, either) so I know just where I get it. This cat is gorgeous...just a normal black and white tabby cat, but with the largest, brightest green eyes ever! She's adorable. And dad can't keep her, so please, if you know anyone looking for a (FREE) kitty (litter trained and VERY friendly), let me know!

Okay, that's all. I'm going to church tomorrow! I miss it a lot. :) Later, kids.

~Grace n peace~

Friday, October 18, 2002

so i go to my mailbox the other day and all my mail was opened and i'm thinking, you know, i am pretty sure this is a federal offense, but then i remember that there is another "Amanda" on campus with the last name "Herrington" (that's with an E) and you'd think that she would look to make sure the name was spelled right at least after the 2nd note she got that was obviously not written to her, but noooo she opened like all five of my letters, which were actually quite personal notes and letters from my friends and a recent encouragement buddy...so dude, that's just not cool.

i did my every-time-i-come-home-goodwill/new-or-not-resale-shop-run today and i got some awesome deals, especially for my punk band outfit which i still need striped socks for, by the way, if anyone has some cool ones they're not going to use anymore---jeff beaver, you would be proud---i got this way cute boy scouts of america shirt that is way stellar and surprisingly feminine (well...no comment) at least on me, think. I also bought two new hats. They do keep my head warm, which is important since I can't dry or curl my hair anymore and just let it air dry---and let me tell ya, it's mighty chilly outside at 6:45 am, especially when you're crossing a moldy lake. Oh, and Jeff, I found these weird Indian vest things that had the nicknames on the breast that said "White-y" and "Little Gem." Did I get them? Well, I was tempted, but there was an emblem and everything on the back and i was afraid it was like some freakish cult or something...AND i figure they're some little kids' and i don't want them crying to me when they realize mom pitched their stuff...AND they were just really, really weird--maybe even too weird for you, jeffy poo.

you know, being a skater is cool now and now i wish was one, but i always sorta wanted to be but i know i can't skate but now everyone wants to be one and that's so not fun (just like this psychotic hippie-look girls got goin on now)...and I know I'd just be a poser skater chic cuz i can't skate and I don't have time to look around for funky skater music...so i've just decided to not have a specific fashion and just buy whatever the heck I want to buy. I know I don't like stripes, blue, heavy sweaters, spaghetti strapped tank tops, short skirts, or khakis. Those are my limits.

I'm in good ol orrville now. Fun place to be. I'm babysitting. I got paid to do it too. I owe a lot of people money. Sigh.

God didn't give me a big sister,
He didn't give me someone to pester,
Someone to whine to or cry,
He didn't give me a big sister
In the room next to mine.
I never had a bunk bed
Or a roomie to talk to at night.
He didn't give me someone to laugh with,
And there was never anyone to fight!
Nope, there was no big sister at my house,
Instead he asked me to wait
And gave me my FIVE sisters at The Lighthouse!

Go 133 Lakeside!!!!!!!!!
And remember you people...Movie and Game Night at the Lighthouse at 8:00 on Friday, November 1st! Spread the word!!! We better see YOU there!

Favorite people of the day:
My Jr. High Adventure campers: Amy, Kimmi, Tina, Cassidy, Jeff, and Kevin!
My Mom and J.R.: because they love me :)
Sharon: because Relient K is coming very, very soon and she wrote me the most stellar note ever the other day and she yells at me when I act like a girl!
Heather: because she eats an extremely large amount of peanut butter everyday
Myself: because if I wasn't me, I'd say something like this--"Amanda is soooo cool. She is so cute! She can say words backwards, too! It's amazing, I tell ya! Gosh she is going to be FAMOUS. A FAMOUS teacher! That can say words backwards! Yeah! Go Amanda!"

Wednesday, October 16, 2002

That should have been "Timmy took Kendra and ME to WalMart..." not Kendra and I. Sorry!
Well Wednesdays are good. So the first part was ka-razy but after 2:30 it is aaaall good. I have a new class--fitness and weight lifting, which is actually a blessing because I really need someone to force me to exercise. Timmy took Kendra and I to WalMart and it was good times. I got 3 rolls of film developed from LAST year! Good stuff! And sho nuff, things haven't changed. I'm still friends with the same people...but we definitely added a great many this year.

Santa Claus is stupid. Don't lie to your kids! You know what really bothers me about Santa Claus? I knew that if SANTA could get in our house with his fat ol' self, almost anyone could. And that is not cool.

Kendra and I have a good time analyzing people. Psychology makes us psychotic, I believe. I can't stop analyzing myself and other people. I keep wondering about every person I meet, "What memories is this person repressing? What kind of relationship did this person have with their parents? Why do they sit like that? Scream across the cafeteria? Eat so much peanut butter? Eat a tablespoon of pepper for a dollar? Play with Kendra's hair all the time?" It's ridiculous, I know.

I LOVE YOU ALL!!!
Peace and God bless.
"Do not fear, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uplift you with my righteous right hand."
-Isaiah 41:10

Sunday, October 13, 2002

Hi ya'll! I visited home today and it was grrrreat!!! I'll be there again next weekend, so if you're in O-Town stop by or give me a riiiing.

Something you should never say: I wish life were perfect. Then, I would be happy.

Imagine something funny, always believe the truth, remember to laugh, I am the princess. (magnetic poetry quotes that are on my desk right now)

Dance party at the townhouse lastnight was awesome! Rock on. Too bad we didn't listen to more of MY music instead of those stinkin boy bands. Eck! :)

Pray for my old testament test tomorrow. I'll probably fail it. I also certainly did not read 8 chapters of Tom Sawyer. Hopefully the fact that I've read it at least ten times will make up for that.

I love you all! Peace and God bless.

"Do everything in love." -1 Corinthians 16:14

Hi! It's homecoming weekend at Muskingum College! Lastnight was Varsity Review, and for those of you who don't go to Muskingum, that's just this little talent show we have every year for talented people to show off. Yes, you're right, I was not in it. Boooo. But guess what? Lots of my friends were! They did an awesome job, too. They just never cease to amaze me. Erin and Jenny Blood sang beautifully, as usual, and Tim, Jake, and Ryan sang that Soggy Bottom Boys song, beards and all, dancing around like a bunch of hillbillies,,,Wade and Joe accompanied on guitar and bass. They were all so cute. :) Also, Ryan Donaghy got homecoming queen and Mike Cullar is our new homecoming king! They are both totally awesome people...and the cool thing is, they not only look great, but most of all, they're really intelligent people and they've really made a difference on this campus. It wouldn't be the same without them.

In other news, I just got back from the football game. But I didn't watch the football game because I was too busy doing spin art and sand art...but I think we were winning when I left. Tomorrow I'll be visiting my church and of course, studying and catching up on some homework...which I might just get out of the way now.

It's incredible how stressful life is when your computer is not working. Poor Alexia is sick. I tell ya, if it's not the printer, it's the computer. Gateway, Gateway, what is wrong with you?

Favorite person of the day:
Tim, because I am sitting here at Lindsay's desk and those daisies you got her are so pretty! They brighten my day. You two are so cute! :) :) :)

Wednesday, October 09, 2002

Wow, has it ever been a busy day! Just wait till next week when another class is added to my schedule! Shwew! Next semester I'll have to make sure I schedule a 9:30 class so I can avoid student teaching so early in the morning...or maybe even some 8:30's to avoid having to work at 7:00. I certainly was not cut out to be a busy person. I am quite lazy and easily flustered. Dr. McKendry liked my idea for an overseas student teaching program and I'll be in contact with some other people in the department, so I should know more about that in a couple weeks...

Ever have those days where the morning seems like months ago? I realized that I have an Old Testament test on Monday. What joy. And two tests tomorrow. Ha! Haven't studied yet. I wish we would go to dinner soon. I am growing quite impatient. I have been very on edge lately. I'm sure I have about 20 people to apologize to.

Anyway, pray for me if you can and all the stuff I'm doing or trying to do...

Favorite person of the day: Don McKendry, because he said my "hairdo" is "pretty."

Random tip for the guys: Yes, girls do need to hear sometimes that they're "pretty."

Prayer request of the day: Pray for all the people struggling with fear of walking outside, for the children in our country that feel unsafe and whose basic needs are not being met. Thanks!

Grace and peace to ya!
